In June 2024, a significant break in a major water main pipe, located in the Bowness neighbourhood of Calgary triggerred an unprecedented water supply crisis in Alberta's largest city.

Mandatory water restrictions were put in across the city, with residents being asked to conserve water by measures such as limiting showers and delaying running dishwashers. Mayor Jyoti Gondek declared a local state of emergency to help speed up repairs.

Calgary water pipes are vulnerable to failure
A major water main broke in the Montgomery and Bowness neighbourhoods in Calgary on Sunday, June 16, 2024. On the evening of June 5th a vehicle-sized water main broke, flooding the Bowness and Montgomery neighborhoods. On the morning of June 6th, at 6:30 a.m. MST, an Amber Alert went off for Calgary and nearby residences, mentioning the water main break, the water restrictions, a boil water advisory for the aforementioned neighbourhoods and a fire ban for Calgary and nearby towns. Originally, with the estimated timeframe for the repair being (at the earliest) 5 - 7 days, it has now been extended to 3 - 5 weeks. During the first several days, water for the Bowness and Montgomery areas had been shut off, and a boil water advisory was put in place with some residents describing what water did come out of the faucets as ‘slimy’.
