Pakistan’s cabinet has approved a draft agreement that allows the government to provide troops for security at the FIFA soccer World Cup in Qatar later this year, Pakistan’s information minister said on Monday.

A summary outlining the agreement, to be signed between Doha and Islamabad, was approved by the cabinet, minister Marriyum Aurangzeb told Reuters, ahead of Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s visit to Qatar starting Tuesday.

It was not immediately clear when the agreement would be signed between the two countries.

The cabinet summary, reviewed by Reuters, said the government of Qatar had requested assistance in security-related aspects of the World Cup between Nov. 21 and Dec. 18 2022, and that Pakistan’s military had proposed the signing of an agreement between both states for the purpose.

“The agreement aims to define the obligations of the two parties, the specific specializations and the number of security personnel to be sent by Pakistan to participate in the security and safety operations,” the summary read.

Qatar’s government media office did not immediately confirm or respond to a request to explain why Doha has requested the Pakistani troops or what they will be doing during the tournament.

There was also no immediate response from the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy, which is overseeing the organization of the World Cup, including security.

The summary did not provide any details of the agreement such as how many personnel could be sent.

The approval of the agreement comes a day before Prime Minister Sharif departs for Doha on a two-day visit starting Tuesday.

Sharif will be accompanied by his cabinet ministers, according to a government handout on Monday.

“The two sides will discuss bilateral relations between the two countries, especially to move forward cooperation in energy, trade, and investment opportunities,” the handout said.

Sharif is also scheduled to visit a soccer stadium in Doha where he will be briefed about the efforts undertaken by the Qatari government in the World Cup, the handout added.

Qatar detains workers protesting late pay before World Cup

Qatar, like other Gulf Arab nations, heavily relies on foreign labour. Qatar’s government acknowledged that “a number of protesters were detained for breaching public safety laws.” However, it declined to offer any information about the arrests or any deportations. It said it was investigating the firm involved and planned to settle workers’ salaries.

Spanish league looking into insults against Atletico player

MADRID The Spanish league and Atletico Madrid will investigate the altercation between Atletico defender Mario Hermoso and some of the club’s fans after the team’s home loss this weekend. The league will look into the alleged insults made against the player, while the club will decide whether any of its fans should be suspended. Hermoso was among Atletico players exercising after the team’s 2-0 loss to Villarreal on Sunday when some fans apparently started to insult players, including Hermoso and forward Antoine Griezmann. Hermoso appeared upset and started to exchange words with fans in the stands where the Atletico ultras are located. The discussion got heated and Hermoso’s teammates kept trying to get him away from the supporters, but he eventually made it toward the stands to confront the fans. It wasn’t clear how many fans were allegedly yelling at the players. Hermoso did not play in the game at the Metropolitano stadium. It was Atletico’s first loss after opening its league campaign with a 3-0 win at Getafe. Atletico’s next match is at Valencia next Monday.

England’s top scorer Ellen White retires after Euro 2022 win

LONDON England’s record scorer Ellen White announced her retirement from soccer Monday after saying her “dreams came true” when the Lionesses won the Women’s European Championship last month. White scored 52 goals in 113 appearances for England’s national team. The 33-year-old Manchester City striker said England’s Euro 2022 triumph made it the ideal time to retire. “My dreams came true on July 31, winning the Euros and becoming a European Champion.”

Washington Spirit fire coach Kris Ward

The Washington Spirit fired head coach Kris Ward on Monday amid a disappointing 1-6-9 season. Ward, 42, helped the Spirit win the franchise’s first NWSL championship in 2021 but was undone by an ongoing 15-match winless streak. The team plans to appoint an interim coach. Assistant coach Angela Salem will run upcoming training sessions, The Athletic reported. Washington’s only league win this season was a 2-1 decision against the OL Reign in the May 1 season opener. Ward joined the Spirit as an assistant coach in August, 2020. He became the acting head coach in August, 2021 after Richie Burke was suspended and later fired following an investigation into abusive behavior toward players. Ward was named the permanent head coach in December.
