Olympic highlights for Aug. 10

  • Breaking: Canadian break-dancer Phil Wizard was crowned breakdancing’s first Olympic gold champion after today’s competition.
  • National record: Katie Vincent’s gold-medal win in the women’s canoe single 200-metre finals Saturday marks Canada’s 25th medal at the Paris Olympics, breaking the national record for medals won at a non-boycotted Summer Games. She also set a new world record, finishing the event with a time of 44.12 seconds. Sophia Jensen placed sixth. Canada’s Michelle Russell was unable to make the podium in the women’s kayak single 500-metre final and placed eighth.
  • Track: Canada’s Marco Arop won silver in the men’s 800-metres, finishing at 1:41.20 – neck-and-neck with Emmanuel Wanyonyi of Kenya, who clocked 1:41.19, just a sliver ahead at the line.
  • Diving: Canadians Rylan Wiens and Nathan Zsombor-Murray placed 7th and 10th in the finals for the men’s 10-metre platform diving event.
  • IOC: International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach says he will not seek to remain in the post after the end of his second term in 2025, despite calls from members to stay on.

Here’s what happened today, Aug. 10, at the Olympics

  • Golf: The women’s individual stroke play finished its fourth and final round, with Canadian Brooke Henderson tied for 13th place and Alena Sharp tied in 42nd place.
  • Wrestling: Canadian wrestler Ana Paula Godinez Gonzalez missed out on a bronze medal in the women’s 62-kg event after losing to Grace Jacob Bullen of Norway by a score of 11-0.
  • Artistic gymnastics: American gymnast Jordan Chiles is set to lose her bronze medal in the women’s artistic gymnastics floor exercise competition after the Court of Arbitration for Sport ruled in favour of an appeal by Romania’s Ana Barbosu, who will move up to third place.
  • Track: Team Canada’s women placed sixth in the 4x400-metre relay, finishing with a season-best time of three minutes 22.01 seconds.
  • Water polo: Canada fell to Greece in an early morning women’s water polo match with a score of 19-10. They place eighth in the tournament overall. Spain beat Australia 11-9 to win their first gold in Olympic women’s water polo.
  • Basketball: Team USA claimed their fifth consecutive Olympic title in men’s basketball after defeating hosts France 98-87. Team Canada fell to the host in the quarter-finals with a score of 82-73.

What to watch for tomorrow, Aug. 11, at the Olympics

  • Marathon: The women’s marathon starts at 2 a.m. ET.
  • Basketball: Belgium and Australia will compete for the bronze medal in women’s basketball at 5:30 a.m. ET, while France and Team USA will play for gold at 9:30 a.m. ET.
  • Wrapping up: All things come to an end and the Paris Olympics are no exception. The closing ceremony for the Games begins at 3 p.m. ET where Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass is expected to participate in the handover ceremony to signify the 2028 Summer Olympics which will be hosted in L.A..
