Olympic highlights for August 1
- Swimming: Summer McIntosh won gold in the women’s 200-metre butterfly final, setting an Olympic record with her 2:03.03 time. McIntosh swam for a potential medal again today with Team Canada but missed out on the podium when they placed fourth in the women’s 4x200-metre freestyle relay final. Meanwhile, Kylie Masse had the fifth fastest time at the women’s 200-metre backstroke semi-finals, and will head to the finals. Josh Liendo placed sixth in the men’s 50-metre freestyle semi-finals while Finlay Knox placed at eighth in the men’s 200-metre individual medley semifinals, just sneaking into the finals.
- Tennis: Felix Auger-Aliassime beat Casper Ruud of Norway in the men’s singles quarter-final, earning a semi-final showdown with Spanish superstar Carlos Alcaraz in Paris on Friday. In mixed doubles, Auger-Aliassime and Ottawa’s Gabriela Dabrowski will play the Dutch duo of Demi Schuurs and Wesley Koolhof for a bronze medal on Friday after dropping Thursday’s semifinal to Czechia’s Katerina Siniakova and Tomas Machac 6-3, 6-3.
- Gymnastics: Team USA’s Simone Biles snagged gold at the women’s all-round gymnastics final this afternoon. Team Canada’s Ellie Black placed in sixth while Ava Stewart finished in 19th place.
- Fencing: Canada missed the chance to win fencing bronze in the women’s team foil competition after being defeated by the Japan.
- Soccer: The International Olympic Committee says they will not investigate past allegations of cheating by the women’s soccer team and any further sanctions will be left in FIFA’s hands. The current sanctions on Canada Soccer, administered by FIFA, include a deduction of six-points in the group stage portion of the Paris Games, a fine of 200,000 Swiss francs (about $313,000) and the suspension of three coaches including head coach Bev Priestman. So far in Paris, Canada has won all three round-robin matches and advanced to the quarterfinals, where they’ll play Germany on Saturday at 1 p.m. ET.

Here’s what happened today, August 1, at the Olympics
- Race Walking: Team Canada’s Evan Dunfee placed fifth in the men’s 20-kilometre race walk, only 21 seconds behind gold winner Daniel Brian Pintado from Ecuador. In the Tokyo Games, Dunfee won a bronze medal for the 50-kilometre race.
- Golf: The men’s round one for the individual stroke play event kicked off on Thursday with Corey Conners, of Listowel, Ont., opening with a 68 – two strokes better than fellow Canadian Nick Taylor of Abbotsford.
- Basketball: Canada’s women team lost a critical match to Australia with a score of 75-60. This decreases their chances of advancing to the quarterfinals with one game left against Nigeria. In 3x3 basketball, the women’s team played hard against Germany but fell short with a final score of 19-15. They won another 3x3 match against France 13-9 this afternoon.
- Sailing: The first race of the women’s dinghy event has concluded after a delay earlier today. Sarah Douglas sailed on the Marseille Marina in the event and ranked 23rd overall. The first 10 boats ranked after 10 rounds in the opening series will progress to the medal race.
- Beach Volleyball: Heather Bansley and Sophie Bukovec extend their losing streak to three games after falling to Australian duo Taliqua Clancy and Mariafe Artacho del Solar with a 21-10, 21-16 score.
- Rowing: Team Canada’s women’s eight rowing team is through to the Final A after placing second in this morning’s repechage after finishing third in Monday’s heat. The winners of the heats already advanced to the finals while remaining teams used the repechage for another chance to qualify. Canada is the defending gold medalist.
- Boxing: Team Canada’s Wyatt Sanford advances to semifinals in men’s 63.5-kilogram boxing after defeating Uzbekistan’s Ruslan Abdullaev with a 4-1 win on points. His semifinal match will take place on Aug. 4, at 6:36 a.m. ET. Canada’s last Olympic boxing medal is a silver from Atlanta in 1996 and the country’s last gold medal in the sport was in 1998′s Seoul Games.
What to watch for tomorrow, August 2, at the Olympics
- Golf: Round two of the men’s individual stroke play starts at 3 a.m. ET with Nick Taylor and Corey Conners.
- Decathlon: Heats for the men’s 100-metre decathlon begin at 4:05 a.m. ET with notable name Damian Warner representing Team Canada. Not only does Warner have the Olympic decathlon record which he earned in the Tokyo Games, he also achieved the world record in the event in 2019 at the Götzis Hypomeeting in Austria. He will also compete in the long jump event at 4:55 a.m. ET. for which he holds the Olympic record made in Tokyo, 2021.
- Swimming: The pool will be eventful yet again with a flurry of competitions. Heats begin for the men’s 100-metre butterfly (Ilya Kharun, Josh Liendo) at 5 a.m. ET, women’s 200-metre individual medley (Sydney Pickrem, Summer McIntosh), at 5:17 a.m. ET and mixed 4x100-metre relay at 6:03 a.m. ET.
- Hammer Throw: The qualifying round for the men’s hammer throw event is underway at 5:35 a.m. ET with Canadians Ethan Katzberg and Adam Keenan taking the stage.
- Rowing: Team Canada’s women’s team will partake in the finals for the lightweight double sculls event beginning at 6:22 a.m. ET at Nautical St.
- Kayak: Kayak cross will makes its debut at the Olympics this summer with the men’s time trial starting at 9:30 a.m. ET and the women’s at 10:40 a.m. ET. First-time Olympian Alex Baldoni, who will be representing Canada in the men’s event, says the sport is a mix of a kayak slalom race, boxing and ski cross.
- Basketball: The men’s team will kick off with a match against Spain at 11:15 a.m. ET, hoping to extend their win streak after defeating Australia 93-83 on Tuesday. The women’s 3x3 basketball team will continue the competition against Spain when they take them on at 3 p.m. ET. Before that, the women’s 3x3 team will face Team USA at 12 p.m. ET.
- Track: Ranked number five in the world, Team Canada’s Mohammed Ahmed will vie for the podium in the men’s 10,000-metre final at 3:20 p.m. ET at the Stade de France.
