Olympic highlights for August 3

  • Canada lost its gold medal hopes as the women’s soccer team loses to Germany on penalty kicks. The game ended 0-0 (4-2). The loss comes amid a drone-spying soccer scandal which saw FIFA lay multiple sanctions on Canada Soccer.
  • Canadians dominated the podium in the men’s 100-metre butterfly final with Josh Liendo and Ilya Kharun taking both silver and bronze. 17-year-old Summer McIntosh also won her fourth medal of the Paris Games, with another gold in the women’s 200-metre individual medley final. While Canada did not make it to the podium in the mixed 4x100-metre medley relay final, Team USA won gold and set a world record in the process at 3 minutes 37.43 seconds.
  • Canadian tennis star Felix Auger-Aliassime lost in the men’s singles bronze against Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti in a 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 game. He will still leave Paris with a bronze medal in mixed doubles with Ottawa’s Gabriela Dabrowski, the first Olympic tennis medal Canada won since 2000.
  • Defending Olympic champion Damian Warner won’t make the decathlon podium after a fatal miss in the pole vault portion of the two-day event. The Canadian currently holds the Olympic decathlon record, and set a previous world record in 2019.
  • The IOC’s president Thomas Bach is backing two female boxers at the centre of a gender controversy, calling online attacks against Algeria’s Imane Khelif and Taiwan’s Lin Yu-ting “unacceptable.” Khelif beat Hungary’s Luca Anna Hamori on Saturday to ensure Algeria’s first Olympic boxing medal since 2000.
