Kylie Masse wins her first medal at the Paris Games in 200-metre backstroke finals and Sophiane Méthot gets on the podium in her Olympic debut

Olympic highlights for August 2

  • Kylie Masse won bronze in the women’s 200-metre backstroke final, her first medal at the Paris Games, while Josh Liendo and Finlay Knox missed the podium in the 50-metre freestyle and 200-metre individual medley, respectively. Liendo and Ilya Kharun have both qualified for the men’s 100-metre butterfly finals after placing third and sixth in Friday’s semifinals. The final will take place on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. Summer McIntosh and Sydney Pickram both qualified for the women’s 200-metre individual medley finals, placing second and fifth in Friday’s semifinals. The medal event is on Saturday at 3:08 p.m. ET.
  • Felix Auger-Aliassime and Gabriela Dabrowski won bronze and the second tennis medal in Canadian Olympic history in mixed-doubles tennis against Demi Schuurs and Wesley Koolhof of the Netherlands at the Stade de Roland Garros. The win came just hours after Auger-Aliassime fell to Spanish superstar Carlos Alcaraz in the men’s singles semi-final.
  • Canadian Sophiane Méthot won bronze in the women’s trampoline event in her Olympic debut in Paris, bringing Canada’s medal tally at the Games to nine.
  • The Canada men’s team remains undefeated at the Paris Games after winning against Spain with a 88-85 score. The women’s 3x3 basketball team lost to Team USA in overtime with a score of 18-17 as well as to Spain with 22-20 in overtime.

Here’s what has happened today, August 2, at the Olympics

  • Decathlon: After day one of the men’s decathlon, Canadian and Olympic record-holder Damian Warner ranks at fourth place. He began his defence of his gold medal on a strong note early Friday morning, finishing first in the 100-metre heats to kick-off the the two-day event. He was unable to clear 2.05-metre in the high jump event and bows out with his clearance of 2.02-metres. Warner also placed sixth in the heats for the 400-metre race.
  • Golf: Round two of the men’s individual stroke golf play has concluded with Canadians Corey Conners and Nick Taylor ranking 13th and 46th, respectively.
  • Figure Skating: Canadian figure skaters won’t be on the podium in Paris next week when the IOC hands out medals for the Beijing 2022 team event marred by a Russian doping scandal. The Court of Arbitration of Sport dismissed Canada’s appeal for the bronze medal, after it placed fourth behind now-disqualified Russia, a decision Skate Canada says is “disappointing.”
  • Kayak: Kayak cross makes its debut at the Olympics this summer, and first-time Olympian Alex Baldoni, representing Canada in the men’s event, has advanced after coming in 24th in the time trial Friday morning. Meanwhile, Canada’s Lois Betteridge placed last in the women’s trial but will still advance.
  • Track: Team Canada’s Mohammed Ahmed narrowly missed the podium in the last seconds of the men’s 10,000-metre final. Uganda took gold, Ethiopia won silver and USA finished with a bronze medal.
  • Hammer Throw: Canadian Rowan Hamilton has already thrown a personal best and clinched one of 12 qualifying spots, while teammate Ethan Katzberg also qualified after throwing the best round in his heat. Canada’s Adam Keenan threw his season’s best but placed eighth in his group and won’t advance.
  • Rowing: Team Canada’s women’s double light scull team came in second in their B final, while Great Britain took gold, Romania claimed silver and Greece nabbed bronze.

What to watch for tomorrow, August 3, at the Olympics

  • Tennis: Felix Auger-Aliassime will play for men’s singles bronze at 6 a.m. ET after falling to Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz in the semi-final Friday morning at Stade de Roland Garros.
  • Swimming: Canada’s men’s team will compete in the 4x100-metre medley relay at 6:46 a.m. ET. The women’s team will swim in their heat at 6:59 a.m. ET. Canada’s mixed 4x100-metre medley relay team will race the final on Saturday at 3:58 p.m. ET after coming in third in its heat on Friday morning.
  • Track: Three-time Olympian and Canadian flag-bearer Andre De Grasse will race in the men’s 100-metre heats starting at 4:35 a.m. ET, as he begins his quest for a seventh medal that would make tie him with Penny Oleksiak to become Canada’s most decorated Olympic athlete.
  • Decathlon: Canadian decathlete and Olympic gold medallist Damian Warner will compete in day two of the Olympic decathlon, after a strong start for the Olympic-record holder with the 100-metre dash and long-jump events on Friday.
  • Soccer: Canada is taking on Germany in the quarterfinals for women’s soccer at 1 p.m. ET, coming off a 1-0 win in a do-or-die match against Colombia on Wednesday.
  • Basketball: The U.S. men’s basketball team is playing Puerto Rico at 11:15 a.m. ET. The Canadian women’s 3x3 team will take on Azerbaijan at 11:30 a.m. ET.
  • Sailing: Two-time Olympic sailor Sarah Douglas will compete for Team Canada in women’s sailing at 8:25 a.m. ET at Marseille Marina. She made Canadian history in 2021 after placing sixth overall in the women’s laser radial class – an all-time best finish for a Canadian in the event.
