On Saturday, Canada’s Phil ‘Wizard’ Kim won the first – and probably last – gold medal in breaking.
He defeated local favourite, Frenchman Dany Dann, in the championship battle.
It’s Canada’s ninth gold medal here, most in a summer tournament since the boycott Games of Los Angeles 1984.
Breaking was a new sport in Paris. It attracted big, frothing crowds over two days at the Place de la Concorde. But the organizers of Los Angeles 2028 have already said they don’t plan to schedule it.
“The Olympics is not the be all and end all,” Wizard, a.k.a. Philip Kim, said. “I’m sad that this is a one and done, but I have a positive mindset moving forward. I think people will fall in love with breaking.”
That puts the Vancouver athlete-dancer in a unique position in sport. The one and only Olympic champion. Maybe for all time.
