ROWING FOR GOLD

The Canadian women’s eights rowing team will seek to defend its Olympic title in the final. The defending champs join Great Britain, Romania, the United States, Australia and Italy for a chance to bring home more hardware. Canada finished second in the repechage with a time of six minutes 4.81 seconds, less than a second behind the American team.

SERVING UP A BRONZE?

Montreal’s Félix Auger-Aliassime will play for another bronze in the men’s singles tennis competition after a decisive 6-1, 6-1 loss to Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz on Friday. Auger-Aliassime won a bronze in the mixed doubles tournament with teammate Gabriela Dabrowski.

SOCCER SHOWDOWN

Canada’s women’s soccer team will go head to head with Germany in the knockout stage of the Olympics tournament in Marseille. Canada stormed into the quarter-final matchup despite a six-point penalty from FIFA stemming from a drone-spying scandal early in the Games, winning all three group-stage games. Germany finished second in Group B with two wins and a lone 4-1 loss to the United States.

MORE MEDALS IN THE POOL?

Canada will hope to medal in the mixed 100-metre medley relay final. The squad, consisting of Maggie Mac Neil, Taylor Ruck, Apollo Hess and Blake Tierney, advanced to Saturday’s final with the sixth-fastest time.

JUDO TEAM EVENT

Canada will compete in the mixed-team judo elimination round of 16 on Saturday against Uzbekistan. It’s been an up-and-down Games for Canada’s judo athletes in Paris, where Christa Deguchi became the first Canadian to win an Olympic gold medal in the sport. Meanwhile, medal-hopeful Shady Elnahas was defeated in the men’s under-100-kilogram Round of 16 on Thursday.
