Beijing Olympics: Latest updates

Olympic events for Feb. 13, 2022
  • Monobob: Canada’s Christine de Bruin won bronze in the inaugural Olympic monobob race at the Beijing Games on Monday. Kaillie Humphries — the Stony Plain, Alta., native’s former Canadian teammate — took gold in her first Olympics competing for the United States with a dominant combined four-run time of four minutes 19.27 seconds.
  • Figure skating: Canada’s Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier finished seventh in ice dance at the Beijing Games, in what was likely their final Olympic appearance. A significant mishap on their lift had Gilles in tears after, and saw the reigning world bronze medallists score 204.78.
  • Curling: A matchup against last-place Russia was just what Canada’s Jennifer Jones needed at the Beijing Olympics. Jones took advantage of several mistakes by Alina Kovaleva en route to an 11-5 victory that ended a three-game losing skid.
  • Speed skating: Canada’s Steven Dubois won the bronze medal in the 500-metre short-track race on Sunday morning. This is Dubois’s second medal of the 2022 Beijing Olympics. He won silver in the 1,500-metre speed skating race in Beijing on Wednesday. The Canadian women’s 3,000-metre relay team failed to reach the podium, finishing fourth.
  • Speed skating: Erin Jackson of the United States scores Olympic gold, becoming the first Black woman to win a speed skating medal. Jackson, a former inline skater who switched to the ice shortly before the 2018 Pyeongchang Games, won the gold in the 500-metre race.

Top-seeded U.S. hockey team ‘not satisfied’ by early success at Beijing Olympics

The young United States men’s hockey team can’t get no satisfaction from going undefeated in the preliminary round at the Olympics. Rolling into the quarterfinals as the only team to win all three of its group games in regulation, the young Americans are suddenly among the favorites to win the gold medal. Their next test is a matchup against the winner of the Slovakia-Germany qualification round game with Sweden or Canada potentially up next in the semi-finals.
