  • Figure skating: Keegan Messing finally hit the ice after a positive COVID-19 test left him stuck in Vancouver.
  • Men’s slopestyle: Canada’s Max Parrot won Canada’s first gold medal in Beijing with a dominant performance in the men’s snowboard slopestyle on Monday, while teammate Mark McMorris took the bronze. • No English: A Canadian-born member of China’s women’s Olympic ice hockey team said she was not allowed to speak English at a post-game media appearance on Sunday in Beijing, in a scene reflecting the relations between the host nation and the foreign-born athletes bolstering its sporting ranks. The awkward moment occurred in the “mixed zone” at Wukesong Sports Centre, where members of the media assembled to ask questions of the host team players following their 2-1 shootout win over Japan.

Max Parrot won Canada’s first gold medal of the Beijing Winter Olympics on Monday in the snowboard slopestyle event. But, it’s not lost on him that exactly three years ago he was in a hospital bed undergoing chemotherapy.

“I had no more muscles, no more energy, no more cardio,” recalled Parrot. “I almost wanted to quit because it was so hard to get to the next morning. And to be standing here three years later and winning gold, that is completely crazy.”

How to be a journalist at the Olympics? Complain: If you jam thousands of socially stunted people together – especially the athletes, many of whom have spent months paranoically hiding from infection – it’s probably not going to be nice, writes Cathal Kelly.
