In our closed deals section, we look at Logistec acquiring a majority interest in Fer-Pal Construction, as well as Wawanesa Mutual Insurance buying Western Financial Group and Western Life Assurance through its subsidiary Trimont Financial. We also look at the sale of Apax's remaining ownership of Garda World.

New venture capital fund aims to fill a gap

A $1-billion equity fund aimed at filling a gap in Canada's venture capital market could help fuel the M&A pipeline as more small and medium-sized enterprises get off the ground and become attractive targets for acquirers. Significant market demand and large institutions' desire to exploit this niche in the capital markets augur well for CBGF's success, and the initiative could become a model for other G20 economies.

The Insolvency Arena

In 2016, bankruptcy checked Performance Sports Group into the boards. But an unbeatable bid followed by a US$575-million asset sale to Sagard Holdings and Fairfax Financial Holdings saved its iconic hockey and baseball brands.

Canadians charities, by definition, aren't about business, but they certainly are about revenue, in the form of donations. In 2016, according to the Canada Revenue Agency, some 86,000 organizations pulled in $15.7-billion in donations. Interestingly, the vast majority of those gifts, about 80 per cent, were directed to Canadian recipients.
