Bank of Montreal has appointed veteran deal maker Andre Hidi to be the vice-chair of its capital markets division.

Mr. Hidi, who has worked at the bank for 13 years, had been the global head of BMO's mergers and acquisitions (M&A) group, managing an almost 100-person team across Canada and the United States. In his new role, he will work with the firm's sector coverage and product teams to deepen relationships with corporate clients, the bank said Thursday in a news release.

He will report to Dan Barclay and Peter Myers, BMO's co-heads of global investment and corporate banking.

"Andre has been instrumental in building our M&A capabilities in the U.S. and strengthening our platform in Canada," Mr. Barclay said in a statement.

Dealmakers John Armstrong, who was the head of Canadian and international M&A, and Lyle Wilpon, who was the head of M&A in the U.S., will now become the firm's co-heads of global M&A.

In their new positions, both will be accountable for the performance of the global unit, but Mr. Armstrong will continue to lead the Canadian and international teams, while Mr. Wilpon will keep managing the U.S. arm.

They will also report to Mr. Barclay and Mr. Myers.

Stephen Poloz, governor of the Bank of Canada, and Carolyn Wilkins, senior deputy governor, give a press conference in which they announce the central bank's first rate hike since 2010.
