How to snag a job at a small business
Resumes, cover letters and LinkedIn are important tools when it comes to finding a job, but they can't trump the personal recommendation, new research shows.
A survey conducted by Angus Reid shows that Canadian small business owners are more than twice as likely to make a hiring decision based on word-of-mouth recommendations than they are by using online tools. In fact, word of mouth from friends, family or a trusted advisor is the top choice at 68 per cent, whereas online methods like job boards and LinkedIn come in second with 31 per cent. HR or recruiting agencies come in at only 8 per cent.
So when traditional techniques don't always work, what's a job hunter looking to work at a small company to do?
Jeff Hayden suggests taking a targeted approach in this Inc.com article. Avoid the numbers game, he says, and figure out which company you really want to work for. Seth Godin, on the other hand, says you need to learn how to sell, write and produce amazing multimedia content, while USA Today offers 7 more straightforward tips, including "don't be dumb."
Young entrepreneurs depart for Russia for G20
Eighteen young entrepreneurs from Canada are packing their bags for Moscow as delegates of the G20 Young Entrepreneurs' Alliance Summit.
They will join hundreds of other entrepreneurs from around the world at the Summit, which runs from June 15 to 17. The purpose of the event is to identify how government and business communities can best harness the potential of young entrepreneurs as drivers of job creation, innovation, economic growth and competitiveness.
The 18 Canadian delegates, listed here, were selected by the Canadian Youth Business Foundation (CYBF) to participate in this fourth annual Summit.
"Their innovation, entrepreneurial leadership and experience will help shape international and domestic policy worldwide and advance youth entrepreneurship in Canada and beyond," said Julia Deans, CEO, CYBF and Canadian co-president, G20 Young Entrepreneurs' Alliance.
