Report on Business magazine: February 2014
The Globe and Mail, its staff and associated freelancers have received a total of 29 National Magazine Award nominations for work published in 2014, it was announced Monday in Toronto by the NMA Foundation.
Report on Business Magazine, published 10 times annually by The Globe and Mail, received 28 nominations, second only to The Walrus which topped this year's honorees with 30 nominations. The other Globe and Mail periodical nominated was Globe Style Advisor, published six times a year, which received a single nod in the still-life photography category for work by Toronto duo Saty + Pratha.
Third place has been claimed by the Quebec newsweekly L'actualité with 21 nominations, followed by Maclean's with 18; Toronto Life 17; Sportsnet 15 and Montreal-based Maisonneuve 14. Five magazines – Canadian Business, Hazlitt, Cottage Life, enRoute and Today's Parent – are tied for sixth place overall, with eight nominations each.
More than 200 magazines, print and digital, English and French, submitted entries from some 3,000 writers, photographers, illustrators and other creators for the 38th annual awards. Winners in 43 juried categories will split close to $55,000 in cash at a ceremony in Toronto June 5. Each first-place finisher earns $1,000; silver winners $500 each.
Finalists for magazine of the year are Montreal's Nouveau Projet (it's the second consecutive nomination for that honour for the cultural publication, founded in 2012), The Walrus and Calgary-based quarterly UPPERCASE. Tablet magazine of the year nominees: Maclean's (Nov. 14, 2014 issue), The Kit (October), Today's Parent (August). Magazine Website of the year: Hazlitt, Maclean's, Torontoist.
Among the multiple nominees associated with The Globe and Mail are RoB Magazine art director Domenic Macri with six considerations; Latin American correspondent Stephanie Nolen (four nominations for one article, High and Dry, in RoB Magazine, published April 25, 2014) and Winnipeg freelancer Jake MacDonald (four nominations for writing in RoB Magazine).
