gta's top employers 2013

Aecon Group Inc. employees on-site. This construction and infrastructure development company is new to the GTA Top Employers list for 2013.

Organizations vying to crack the list of the GTA's Top Employers faced tough competition this year. Employers are compared with others in their field, so the winners had to beat their industry peers in the review process by the editors at Mediacorp Canada.

According to Richard Yerema, managing editor of Canada's Top 100 Employers, most industry category areas were well represented. Mr. Yerema also notes that the list features an exceptionally diverse base of employers, from software to manufacturing to finance to media, showcasing the GTA's diverse economy.

Each employer's operations and human resources practices were judged by the same eight criteria as the national competition of Canada's Top 100 Employers: physical workplace; work atmosphere and social; health, financial and family benefits; vacation and time off; employee communications; performance management; training and skills development; and community involvement.

One evolving trend continues to be a focus on family-friendly initiatives such as top-up payments that include fathers and adoptive parents, as well as generous support available for fertility treatments. Another emphasis is on stability versus flashy benefits such as Friday beer carts – a reflection of the boomers' retirement combined with harder economic times.
