Managers need to be taught how to handle layoffs.

It's been a dark November so far on the layoff front. Last week Canadian engineering and construction firm SNC Lavalin Group Inc. announced it was laying off 4,000 workers as commodity prices slump and global mining activity falls. Earlier this year the CBC and Bombardier also announced layoffs.

So, what do you do if you've been given a dreaded pink slip? What are your legal rights? How much severance are you entitled to? Is your former employer supposed to offer some help to get you back on your feet?
