The action
This 2½-storey house near Upper Canada College was briefly owned by former Bank of Canada governor Mark Carney more than 20 years ago. That detail motivated some buyers to visit but for many the draw was a prime address and the 50- by 150-foot lot.
“People are always talking about it in Forest Hill, and everyone comes to me – agents and buyers – and asks if this was Mark Carney’s home,” said agent Jane Zhang.
“This particular neighbourhood in Toronto attracts national and international buyers – for good reason – because of the schools, location, and proximity to downtown Toronto.”
About 20 groups passed through before one guest made a $5.475-million bid at the end of July.
“2024′s summer was not great for the luxury market,” said Ms. Zhang.
“This was one of the only successful sales, in that period of time, over $5-million. Everything else was just sitting.”
What they got
This 101-year-old classic revival-style house incorporates more modern touches and additions.
The main floor has a kitchen and formal areas for entertaining and dining. Set behind the garage is a casual family room with a gas fireplace and double doors to an Ipe wood deck and perennial gardens.
A staircase leads to the upper floors, where there is an office, five bedrooms and two of the home’s four bathrooms.
A second stairwell leads to an updated basement.
The agent’s take
“My seller was planning to rebuild because it’s a classic lot – 50 by 150 feet – with a south-facing garden, which is attractive,” said Ms. Zhang.
“It has enough mature trees at the south and west part of the lot, and people like it because they need privacy in this part of the city.”
