The open house event for this three-bedroom bungalow drew about 90 potential buyers equally intrigued by the chance at an unusually large 0.75-acre corner lot seven kilometres south of the city core and the neighbour’s tales of the original owner, well-known Alberta oilman Bill Herron.

“It was a special property,” said agent Renata Reid. “The lot is about four times as big as anything else [in the area].

“The adjoining properties beside it were also owned by the Herron family.”

In the end, there were three offers for the property, the highest coming in at $3-million. The house comes with two garages that can together store seven vehicles, one of which would have been Mr. Heron’s iconic customized 1966 Pontiac Bonneville convertible, adorned with chrome-tipped longhorns and chrome plated six shooters that has often appeared at the Calgary Stampede parade.

“For car lovers, it’s so interesting to see a property like that,” Ms. Reid said. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen a seven-car garage home.

“The average price point in this area is anywhere from $1-million to $1.5-million, so this was a record sale for the area.”

What they got

This 68-year-old house was recently upgraded and expanded to have 3,279 square feet of living space, including a new wing with a second office and two bedrooms.

A gas fireplace with a Rundle stone surround anchors the living room, while another fireplace rests between the kitchen and dining room.

Floors are heated in many areas, such as three out of four bathrooms, and recreation and guest rooms downstairs.

Exterior highlights include a south-facing deck, patio, basketball court and fenced-in dog kennel.

“The current owner renovated it completely to the studs and made it the beautiful property it is today,” Ms. Reid said.

“It’s so rare to find nearly an acre of land in an area so close to downtown and amenities.”
