A tiny house that has a decidedly limited appeal but that nonetheless occupies a niche attractive for some. The 1868 minicottage is located on one of the first streets in the old quarter of Sainte-Thérèse, once a typical Quebec village that is now an off-island suburb northwest of Montreal. The minicottage has six rooms, including two attic bedrooms. The seller, a woman in her 80s who paints, added a studio space in which to work.
The action
Unlike many neighbouring houses, the minicottage still has its original gabled roof.
Despite its seemingly small pool of potential buyers, the house generated a fair amount of interest, real estate agent Annie Benjamin said. “It’s a property that’s not to everyone’s liking,” she said. But the price helped clinch a deal after only eight days on the market. “Properties in that price range move relatively quickly,” she said. There were two offers.
The agent’s take
The seller added a studio space in the yard.
Clearly, this is a place best suited to a single person, Ms. Benjamin said. It has retained much of its original look, including the distinctive gabled roof. Many of the other houses in the area that are similar to this one had their original roofs replaced to make way for a proper second-floor addition. “It’s quite charming and it’s been extremely well maintained,” Ms. Benjamin said. The buyer is a young woman from the area who is a music teacher, she said.
