RCMP cordon off a crime scene using police tapeJOHN LEHMANN

A 23-year-old man is in police custody following a fatal overnight stabbing on the city's east side, in which alcohol was said to be a factor.

No charges have been laid and no names released.

Crime-scene tape cordoned off a basement apartment at 1678 Kingston Rd., near Birchmount Road, after police and paramedics responded to a 911 call shortly before 3:30 a.m., and witnesses were being questioned.

An unidentified man aged 58 was pronounced dead at the scene, pushing Toronto's homicide total for the year so far to 22, seven of which have been stabbings.

One of those victims was 28-year-old Dylan Palumbo, 28, stabbed last week during a robbery and home invasion on Bogert Avenue, near Sheppard Avenue and Yonge Street.

Police said Mr. Palumbo was stabbed several times as he stepped out of the shower, and on Monday night they released grainy security-camera images of two suspects sought in his death.

Also Monday night, a man in his 20s was shot and wounded around 11 p.m. near Rogers Road and Blackthorn Avenue.

He sustained a serious but non life-threatening wound to the leg, paramedics said.
