Ontario's police watchdog is probing why a man was injured Friday afternoon when officers were called to a shopping plaza.

Police from the city's 12 Division were at the plaza at about 12:30 p.m. when someone reported that there was a person with a knife, said Constable Wendy Drummond. Because the Special Investigations Unit has been called in that's all police can say, she said.

The SIU said officers were patrolling the area in a police vehicle. There was some sort of interaction between the officers and the man, who made his way towards Weston Road near a highway ramp. Police fired several shots, the SIU said in a statement, and the man was later rushed to Sunnybrook Hospital with serious injuries.

Only hours before, shortly before 9 a.m., the SIU was called to investigate the death of a man near Shuter and Parliament streets. Toronto police had responded to a 15th floor apartment unit and heard shouting upon arrival. What happened next is unclear but the SIU says a man was found shortly after, on the ground floor without vital signs. He was pronounced dead a few minutes later.

The SIU is called in when there are reports of police being involved in situations resulting in death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
