Toronto police are searching for at least one suspect who fled on foot after a fatal afternoon shooting at a Scarborough barber shop near a mall.

Constable Tony Vella said police responded to the Malvern Town Centre at about 12:45 p.m. Tuesday about the sound of gunshots. They found an adult man dead at the scene, he said. The victim has been identified as Chris Thompson, 35, of Toronto.

At least one suspect took off on foot but there may have been others, he said, either on foot or in a vehicle. No victim or suspect descriptions were available.

Officers are talking to a few witnesses but encourage others to come forward. "I'm sure there would be more," Constable Vella said, noting it's a "densely populated area."

The man who was shot dead is yet to be identified, police said, and a motive isn't known. Const. Vella said officers will search through nearby surveillance footage.
