A 35-year-old Calgary man is expected to be brought back to Ontario Friday after being charged with second-degree murder in the slaying two years ago of a woman whose body was discovered in a Caledon ditch.

Thomas Andronakos is charged in the death of Kera Freeland, 20, who worked as an escort and with whom he shared a west Toronto apartment.

Both had roots in Calgary.

Ms. Freeland vanished Jan. 16, 2011. Her body was discovered two months later.

A post-mortem indicated she was killed around the time she went missing.

Ms. Freeland was pregnant when she disappeared.

Detectives believe her body had been in the ditch since shortly after was killed, and say the snow and cold weather preserved crucial evidence that  had a key bearing on Wednesday's arrest.

No cause of death was revealed, but an Ontario Provincial Police source said toxicology tests played a key role in the arrest of Mr. Andronakos.

The two had shared an apartment on Lake Shore Boulevard near Royal York Road.

OPP officers travelled to Calgary to help coordinate the arrest and will be escorting Mr. Andronakos back to Ontario.
