A weekly tip sheet for shoppers
With Thanksgiving a week away, it's time to start thinking about how you're going to wow family and friends. The first step is to decide on the type of bird you want to serve. These five stores will help you do better than the average Butterball.
Fresh from the Farm, 350 Donlands Ave. Jacqui and Tim Schmucker get their hormone- and drug-free turkeys from Amish and Mennonite farmers in the Elmira area. While the store is open only on Fridays and Saturdays, you can call 416-422-3276 or visit before Monday to place orders.
Noah's Natural Food, 322 Bloor St. W. Now the vegans can give thanks for more than just potatoes, cranberry sauce and salad. Tofurkey, a tofu roll accompanied by tempeh wings and drumsticks, will make any vegetarian feel welcome.
Madina Halal Meat, 1063 Danforth Ave. Twice a year, at Thanksgiving and Christmas, this 18-year-old family business stocks 12- to 18-pound turkeys prepared according to Islamic law. For kosher, try Perls Meat Products at 3013 Bathurst St.
Cumbrae's, 481 Church St. One of the best places in the city to get a wide selection of fresh game such as venison, duck and pheasant. Also popular around this time of year is bone-in ham. Orders must be placed a week ahead.
The Butchers, 2636 Yonge St. Owner Marlon Pather offers organically raised chicken, quail and turkey, but customers can also get their birds stuffed or marinated with seasonings. Think tandoori-style turkey. Wild Alberta turkeys are available on special order by Thursday.
