Transit, ports and airports are working under a "heightened state of vigilance" but Canada remains safe from the threat of terrorist attacks, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness Anne McLellan said Thursday.

"There is no specific threat against Canada at this time," she said in a statement. "I would like to assure Canadians that we are remaining vigilant and that Transport Canada, the Government Operations Centre, Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA), Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), jointly with other law enforcement agencies, are taking appropriate measures to protect Canadians based on ongoing threat assessments."

The statement was issued after London police confirmed that four small bombs had exploded in London's transit system Thursday morning, just two weeks after the devastating suicide bombings that killed 56 people in that city.

Canadian Press reports that the federal government is holding teleconferences with municipal transit authorities across the country.
