Canada Task Force 1 is made up of 120 members from Vancouver's Fire Services, BC Ambulance Services and City Of Vancouver Engineering Department who volunteer their time to prepare for a disaster. Can-TF1 is one of only four nationally recognized Heavy Urban Search and Rescue (HUSAR) teams in Canada. On any given Saturday team members can be seen cutting away wood, drilling through concrete and honing their skills. The location is in East Vancouver, boxed in by train tracks and warehouses on a small city lot protected by three-metre fences and barbed wire. Piles of rubble recycled from the old Boundary Road overpass, Riley Park Arena and a Coast Mountain Bus set the scene. It's like something out of a movie set or video game with the pile of girders, metre-thick cedar beams, 800 concrete blocks and vehicles that represent what could be an ugly reality after an earthquake.
