1. Put down the remote
Start searching for adventures that bring your Netflix binges to life. It seems filming-location tours are available for almost every beautifully shot series. A small sampling: Game of Thrones in Iceland, Westworld in Utah, Twin Peaks in Washington State, The Crown in England and Outlander in Scotland. So pack that kilt and nerd out.
2. Turn back time
Who says you have to go somewhere new? Revisiting a childhood vacation classic or meaningful stop from your backpacking days can be a profound experience whether you're by yourself or sharing it with your kids for the first time. Consider it the ultimate #TBT. Just don't be surprised if everything seems smaller.
3. Work it out
How's that resolution to "get in shape" going? Perhaps committing to a goal-based excursion will keep you on track. You could do an Ultra Challenge and walk 100 km in 24 hours in Wales this August. Or train for the RBC GranFondo Whistler, a 122-km cycle along the Sea-to-Sky corridor in September. And you still have a whole year to prep for the Honolulu Marathon in December.
4. Pick up a book
Pick a fave author or character and follow in their footsteps. This year, special events are planned to celebrate both Emily Bronte (200th anniversary of her birth) and Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (200th anniversary of publication). And, no doubt, the renewed interest in The Jungle Book will inspire some treks to India.
5. Beat FOMO
Don't let the Instagram influencers overwhelm you with an endless stream of dreamy options. Choose a country or city and then focus on IGers who actually live in the area. That's how you'll find the perfect shakshuka for brunch or secret waterfall trail – and enjoy a vacation tailored to your tastes.
