MIND TRICKS LEMONDROP.COM
Chew on this: You're probably thinner than you think.
Lifestyle blog Lemondrop reported this week on a perception study by scientists at University College in London. The team found that a person's body image is often "massively distorted" in his or her mind, perceiving shape, for instance, as two-thirds wider than it really is. (This is called the brain's "body model.")
In their research, the scientists asked participants to rest the palms of their left hands under a board and then judge the locations of 10 areas, such as their knuckles and fingertips.
These estimates were used to create a "map" of the brain's image of the hand, which was then compared to actual size and shape.
The researchers believe the distortion stems from various sensory signals being sent to the brain from different parts of the skin.
We just think it's awesome news.
