Thing The Periodic Table Printmaking Project

PERSON THE HEADLESS MODEL

Whether or not they're "super," models, at the end of the day, are basically walking mannequins.

Even so, it still seems audacious when they're literally treated as such, which is why two new spring/summer 2010 ad campaigns - Prada and Phoebe Philo's triumphant comeback at Celine (above) - raised eyebrows this week.

Both sets of ads feature the standard lithe torsos clad in the brands' latest fashions - but with the models' heads cut off.

Marie Antoinette must be thrilled with her posthumous trendsetting status.

PLACE RHYL, NORTH WALES

If you're a seagull that's been flying over North Wales and harassing innocent shoppers, it might be time to fall back.

The small coastal town of Rhyl is planning to put a few hawks, an owl and a falcon on patrol in an effort to stop seagull attacks in the town's shopping district, where they are bafflingly common.

The project is set to launch in March and the birds' handlers will wear medieval dress, we assume, to add to the we-mean-business vibe.

THING THE PERIODIC TABLE PRINTMAKING PROJECT

Science hasn't been this cool since Bill Nye hung up his bow tie.

The Periodic Table Printmaking Project brings together a group of 97 artists from 7 countries to illustrate the Periodic Table of the Elements in a variety of media.

The works are displayed on the project website ( www.azuregrackle.com/periodictable/table ).

One element that's missing? The element of surprise. As is the case with most cool websites these days, the mandatory book is said to be in the works.
