For denim fans who don't think much of distressing, there are many other options for interesting jeans

Max Mara’s resort 2018 collection.

Although the ripped-jean look is still in fashion's favour, there are plenty of other novel approaches to denim these days. I dare say they're less abundant than their frayed cousins; even the most seemingly prim pair of jeans has a thread-dangling cuff, it seems. But a bit of digging reveals a trove of trousers that have been spared the scissors, but not the style factor.

Max Mara might be a label renowned for perfecting wardrobe staples such as the camel coat, but it recently tackled jeans in a sophisticated way. The slightly tapered leg and dark rinse would give your gams an edge.

True Skinny jeans, $89.95 at Gap (gapcanada.ca).

Unique tailoring elements are another way to upgrade your dungarees. Tibi's slouchy raw denim style has contrasting stitching to add a little flair to your lower half. Though the cut and texture are quite modern, the pair's high waist has a slightly retro feeling.

If you can't get enough of that old school stuff, Société Anonyme's pale indigo pair has a high rise, straight leg and whimsical stitching on one of the rear pockets. Cheeky, yes, but still suitable for those who would rather forgo the cut-up offerings.

Easton jean, $375 (U.S.) through tibi.com.

Those slightly more adventurous could opt for Gap's homage to acid wash. It's important that if you're going to sport something which has a whiff of nostalgia, that you keep the rest of the outfit au courant. (So, wear with a chic silk blouse and not an ironic rocker tee.)

The saying might go, "If they're too ripped, you're too old," but it seems like a nod to the past might be just the thing to update your look this season.
