The question

'Spring sweater' seems like an oxymoron, but are there ways to wear knits in warm weather without overheating?

The answer

This question is like asking if there are ways to eat chocolate without gaining weight. It's all about moderation. Have you never experienced the breezy feel of a fine-gauge knit? If not, it's time to seek one out – just be sure to check your fabrics when you're shopping.

In many ways, breathable fibres like wool or linen are preferable to synthetics, which trap body heat. You can also try cobweb-style sweaters that expose more skin than cover it – there's little likelihood you'll overheat in one of those. A more ladylike option is a crocheted cardigan, such as the one Michael Kors showed in his spring 2014 collection. Even lightweight cotton sweaters (not chunkier cable-knit numbers) will get you through the season without your breaking much of a sweat.

Of course, the most obvious way to sport knitwear without the risk of overheating is to wear it over your shoulders (no, this look isn't limited to prepsters and golf-club members); once the AC kicks in, you'll certainly be happy to have an extra layer close at hand.
