A seemingly effortless complexion, where skin looks clean, healthy and fresh, has been de rigueur for some time, thanks to proponents such as runway makeup artist Gucci Westman, model Daria Werbowy and Glossier founder Emily Weiss. But a radiant complexion requires more than a swipe of highlighter across the cheekbones.

"Dewy skin is the ultimate mark of healthy skin, which is why it's so sought-after," says Vicky Tsai, the founder and CEO of Japanese skincare brand Tatcha. "The ingredients we use are the basis of the Japanese diet – green tea, rice, seaweed – and are known to be good for the health, so it makes sense that they are good for the skin, as well." Consistent maintenance, including healthy lifestyle choices, goes a long way.

A Harvard Business School grad, Tsai founded her brand as an homage to the self-care rituals of geishas, and has since developed a following for Tatcha's hydrating products. "When the skin is healthy and young, it is full of water. When the light hits it, it reflects like light off a pool of water, but with an even deeper glow," she says. To reveal your inner glow, Tsai recommends beginning with exfoliation to create a smooth canvas before plumping skin with hydrating products such as essences, moisturizers, masks and mists. An oil can help treat skin and can also be worn with your foundation for added shine.

What to try

Tatcha The Essence, $114 through sephora.ca.

Tsai created the Essence to quickly deliver deep hydration into skin. Made with Okinawa red algae and hyaluronic acid, this superfluid increases hydration levels by 148 per cent within moments.

Eve Lom Radiance Face Oil, $104 at Murale.

This blend of some of my favourite oils, including hemp seed and avocado, is lightweight and nourishing for a lit-from-within finish.

Urban Decay Drop Shot Mix-In Facial Oil, $45 at Shoppers Drug Mart, Urban Decay and through sephora.ca and urbandecay.ca.

Urban Decay co-founder Wende Zomnir recommends mixing this oil with her Naked Skin foundation for a "dewy, radiant glow."
