His real name is Winadzi, which means 'the raider,' and was given to him by his grandfather. But among the students at Rosser Elementary School in Burnaby, B.C., he's better known as Simon Daniel James, an artist who teaches native culture through singing, dancing, carving, painting and storytelling. Mr. James is currently working on a project where the students are helping him carve and paint a totem pole from a block of wood. 'This is very important because the students get to participate in a three-dimensional project, and they get to understand why the totem poles

are here and more about the first peoples that were here,' he says. 'I think that's very important for the future generation to understand.'
