Mariam Rahman of @rahmanbeauty shares her tips for bringing the Butterfly Instagram filter to life

Mariam Rahman’s Instagram account is a treasure trove of beauty inspiration, from Euphoria-inspired looks to retro throwbacks featuring orange liner. The Pakistani-Canadian beauty influencer, who lives in Calgary, Alberta, first started creating makeup looks on Instagram as a hobby and a form of therapy in 2016. Today, she studies biology by day and dreams up gorgeous makeup looks in her spare time.

Based on her feed filled with eye-catching makeup looks that push the edges of what you might consider ‘daytime beauty,’ Rahman was just the right person to call upon to show us how to create an Instagram filter-inspired look IRL. She’s guaranteed to give you a little nudge outside of your beauty comfort zone and even teach you a new makeup technique or two. Here’s how to create a more wearable version of the trendy butterfly filter using the bright and playful new makeup line from Quo Beauty, available at Shoppers Drug Mart.

Start with colourful eyeshadow as the base for your look, using three Quo Beauty Stay Put Eyeshadow shades. Begin by sweeping Volcanic, a peachy-orange colour, across the entire lid with a fluffy blending blush. Blend it up towards the crease.

Layer on Lavender Field, a purple hue, beginning from the middle of the lid and out towards the outer corner of the eyes.

Then, use the teal shade in Deep Sea to create a winged effect. Tip: Make sure to blend to help diffuse the colour, as well as create a natural gradation of all three shades.

Use the shade Volcanic again to create the lower wings of a butterfly, tracing and filling in the shape.

Fill in your brows using short, hair-like strokes with the Quo Beauty Ultra Precision Brow Pencil in Dark Brown. Use the spoolie brush on the other end to comb through the hairs for a more natural look.

Using the Quo Beauty Liquid Precision Marker in Jet Black, outline the shape of a butterfly’s wings. Create an arc from the midway point of your lid towards the tail of your brows. Make another line from the outer corner of the eye (as if you were creating an exaggerated winged liner) and connect it to the end of the first line.

Outline the lower wings with the same liquid liner, beginning with the outer corner of the eyes. To ensure the look is symmetrical, trace the shape with an eye pencil first before going in with a liquid liner.

Fill in the lower wings with the Quo Beauty Stay Put Eyeshadow in Lavender Field.

Add short strokes of black liner to create the wing pattern on the upper and lower wings.

Dot the outer corners of the wings using the Quo Beauty Liquid Precision Marker in White Out.

Add colour to the lower wings with Quo Beauty Stay Put Eyeshadow in Lavender Field (the same shade as the purple used above).

Apply one coat of Quo Beauty Pump Up The Volume Mascara in Purple on your bottom lashes to make them pop.

Add a touch of radiance to the inner corners of the eyes with a highlighter from the Quo Beauty Eyeshadow Palette in Star Gazer. Use your finger to gently dab it on.

Use one drop of the Quo Beauty Dewy Cheek Tint in Daring, tapping it across your cheeks and nose for a flush of colour. A little goes a long way, so use sparingly and build it up as needed.

Complete the look with the Quo Beauty Velvet Kiss Liquid Lipstick. Use the shade Coffee First to overline the lips, drawing just slightly outside the natural contours of your pout. Use the lighter shade, Barefoot to fill in the lips.

Ready to take flight with your new look? The Butterfly filter is a great, photo-friendly makeup idea for Halloween or even a Friday night FaceTime with the girls—move aside, Instagram filters!—that can be easily created using quality makeup from Quo Beauty.
