While Hurricane Milton will certainly not affect U.S. farmers, nor have any direct impact on grain and most soft commodities, we thought it would be interesting, nevertheless, to discuss how unusual this hurricane might be.

  • Regarding commodities, markets such as lumber and orange juice may react.
  • For corn and soybeans, questions regarding the demand side of the equation, how much late U.S. summer heat may have damaged the soybean crop a bit (very low moisture content during harvest), plus South American weather, will be driving forces in these markets for the months to come.
  • As far as the wheat market is concerned, some improved weather coming for western Russia and Australia vs dryness in the Plains will influence wheat price action.
  • The real weather news in commodity markets right now is my forecast 10 days ago that Brazil's coffee and soybean drought would ease. Have we seen the top in the coffee market? What about grains, cotton, natural gas, and others?
