Ottawa Rejects Glencore's Sukunka Open-Pit Coal Mine

Baystreet - Fri Dec 23, 2022
Canada’s federal government in Ottawa has rejected Glencore's (GLCNF) plans to develop the Sukunka open-pit metallurgical coal mine in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia.

Federal Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault said the scientific evidence shows that the mine’s negative impacts were significant and could not be mitigated.

The project assessment raised concerns about southern mountain caribou and its critical habitat, grizzly bear mortality rates, and the discharge of mercury and selenium into the local environment.

British miner Glencore had proposed to operate an open-pit mine that would have produced three million tonnes of hard coking coal per year for export to overseas markets.

The mine life of the project was expected to be more than 20 years.

The Government of Canada said its decision does not prevent Glencore from submitting new project proposals and does not preclude other future mine site developments.

Glencore’s stock is up 44% in 2022 and trading at $556.40 British pounds ($914.03 Canadian dollars).
