Cenovus Energy Ordered To Clean-Up Diesel Spill In Alberta Lake

Baystreet - Tue Jun 27, 2023
Canadian oil company Cenovus Energy (CVE) has been ordered to clean-up more than 1,000 litres of diesel fuel that has spilled into a lake in northern Alberta.

The Alberta Energy Regulator ordered the clean-up and said that Cenovus Energy was operating a temporary diesel generator near Rainbow Lake due to a power outage caused by wildfires when the spill occurred.

Between 1,000 and 1,500 litres of diesel fuel is believed to have leaked from the generator into Rainbow Lake on June 17.

Rainbow Lake is situated in northwest Alberta near the community of High Level. It is known to have fish and is popular with Indigenous people in the area.

The provincial regulator said Cenovus Energy has implemented an emergency response plan and is recovering the diesel fuel from the lake.

The regulator also said that Cenovus must assess fish and wildlife that may have been impacted by the diesel leak.

Cenovus Energy’s stock has decreased 14% in the last 12 months and currently trades at $21.74 per share.
