What is it?

The global debut of the compact crossover all-electric vehicle occurred on Tuesday; test drives were taken on a short track in Las Vegas with a pre-production model. The Bolt is GM’s next step from the gas/electric Volt.

Signature feature

With approximately 320 kilometres of capacity on a single charge, Chevrolet believes range concerns will be appeased as the average daily commute is 48-64 kilometres. Chevy believes the Bolt will appeal to ride-sharing groups. Using OnStar, a code can be sent to a renter, with billing sent automatically.

What else is new?

Design cues are taken from crossovers – spacious inside with a flat floor, sporty look outside, just enough cargo space to fit a set of golf clubs. The car is smart; on approach, it sets driving patterns according to tastes. Connectivity features include a bright 10.2-inch touchscreen, EV navigation mapping, remote access via new MyChevrolet mobile app, uses Apple CarPlay and Android audio. Safety features include side blind alert, rear cross traffic alert, rear park assist, lane keep assist, front pedestrian braking, front automatic braking, rear camera mirror, surround vision from on top, 80-degree rear view, and self-seal Michelin tires.

Under the hood

There’s a single motor, though Chevrolet is reserving specifics until the Detroit auto show next week. It showed impressive torque coming through a corner into a straightaway. It goes from 0-to-100 km/h in about seven seconds and is fun to drive.

When will it be available and for how much?

Production begins at the end of 2016. The price – after $7,500 federal rebate in the United States – will be less than $30,000. The Canadian price is still to be announced.

It’s a unique entry, with the Nissan Leaf its primary competitor. Check out the series of barely legal, hockey-puck sized headlamps and taillights.
