I have a 2016 BMW X1 with 67,000 kilometres on the odometer. I recently started getting a “secure vehicle from rolling” error message. I did some internet sleuthing and discovered that this is a common problem with X1′s and that it is caused by a $10 spring in the gear selector that wears out.
Unfortunately, I also discovered that most dealerships will recommend replacing the entire gear selector at an estimated cost of between $2,500 and $4,000. I contacted BMW customer service about this issue thinking that because the problem is the result of a design defect and because it would appear to be a safety issue that there might be a recall that I missed or that they would offer some kind of goodwill adjustment.
Unfortunately, their response was along the lines of “too bad, so sad.” The vehicle is working fine (gear selector works and the emergency brake engages), so I am considering just living with the error message or seeing if I can find a shop that is willing and able to replace the spring as opposed to replacing the entire gear selector. Have you seen this problem and/or do you have any advice as to what my best option would be?
Thanks kindly - Dave B.
The spring in question is indeed a common problem. You can find this spring online quite easily; finding someone to replace it however may not be. The dealer won’t do it as this spring is not sold by BMW as a separate individual part. Therefore, this creates a potential problem for any dealer as it goes against their licensing agreements with the manufacturer to not install aftermarket, non-approved parts.
However, if you can find a local BMW specialist or even an import specialist and supply them the spring, I’m sure they can help. There are plenty of videos online showing the procedure. While it may be a bit of a pain to do, I’m sure it’s within the skill level of a high-end DIY’er or any licensed auto technician.
