I have run-flat tires on my 2023 Lexus NX 350h and would like to know if you recommend getting run-flat winter tires. I feel a puncture is much less likely in the winter, so I could save some money by buying regular tires.

Thanks - Pierre L.

Many people feel that using conventional non run-flat tires for the winter is perfectly fine. You won’t get much argument from me either, but your Lexus dealer on the other hand will not agree. If you have any kind of driveability problems, they will immediately insist that you have the incorrect tires on your car regardless of what the issue really is.

That being said, vehicle manufactures who specify run-flat tires often supply them in sizes that are only available as run-flats. In other words, the tire size as equipped will only yield one or two non run-flat alternatives. They do this on purpose to limit the conventional tire options in that exact size.

This means in many cases you will need to downsize your wheels and tires and start playing around with the tire size to get the desired overall circumference and width.

While I don’t have a problem with conventional tires for winter driving, you must still adhere to the manufacturer’s specifications for speed, load and maximum tire inflation. If you are unfamiliar with these terms and what they mean, then you need to rely on a tire professional to help decipher and point you in the right direction. Also keep in mind that vehicles specified with run-flats do not have a spare tire and rarely have roadside tire changing equipment on board so you will need a roadside assistance package. Your tire pressure monitoring system also may not function properly. Handling characteristics will also differ as run-flat tires are much harder and less pliable. Most people prefer the feel of conventional tires over run-flats, but that is a subject for another day.
