Hi Lou,

I have a 2018 Volkswagen Golf 7 hatchback trendline. I would appreciate if you could tell me if it is okay to use regular fuel at Petro-Canada?

Many thanks – Amine R.

Most Petro-Canada locations offer regular Clean with an 87-octane rating, PlusClean at 89 and Superclean Premium fuel at 91 octane. Select locations across Alberta, Ontario and Quebec offer an additional fuel grade of 94 Octane.

In most instances readers are inquiring if they can use regular fuel in their vehicles that actually require premium. With that in mind I am assuming that you are under the impression that your Golf requires premium fuel. With the exception of the Golf R model, all Golfs are designed to operate efficiently using regular 87 octane. Your owner’s manual will help you out when in doubt, but rest assured you are good to go with regular fuel at Petro-Canada.

My car takes regular gas. Is there a benefit to premium or is it just a waste of money?

Do I really need to use premium fuel in my premium SUV?
