Last week, an article by Globe reporter Bill Curry about Europe's reaction to Canada's frequent criticism of its financial system garnered the most comments of any other on our website.
The headline was Europe snaps back at Harper's hard line on debt crisis, and of the 1,684 comments left on that article, the highest rated was by Kristen-T, with a score of 146 (252 votes up, 106 votes down):
Lest Mr. Stephen Joseph Harper forgets is was Canada's strong banking regulations that enabled Canada to withstand the world financial meltdown of 2008.
Coincidentally those very same regulations that Mr. Harper railed against while in opposition and which he would have eliminated.
It was lax regulations that enabled Goldman Sachs to almost destroy the global economy.
While in opposition Mr. Harper always chided Paul Martin for being too prudent and cautious.
If we had had Stephen Joseph Harper in office before 2006 we would be no better off than the US or Europe right now.
Lest Mr. Harper also forgets he assumed office with a set of books in the black and in surplus and a country that was paying down debt.
If anyone wants advice on financial matters they will ask someone competent and who knows what they are doing.
Paul Martin.
I would be remiss if I did not mention the efforts of Michael Wilson in those string regulations and in the wisdom of Paul Martin not lashing out in spite and like a petulant child in maintaining said regulations.
