We're pleased to announce the launch of a new tablet app: The Globe and Mail Android Edition.
This app features a completely new design, focused on delivering the best possible reading experience across all Android tablets. Here are a few of the goals we had in mind when building this app:
Easy navigation between stories and sections
We’ve introduced a simple, new way of navigating through the app: Swipe up or down to browse stories within a section, or swipe left or right to visit a new section. This should help reduce the number of taps or swipes needed to browse The Globe and Mail and help you get to your favourite stories faster.
Reader-focused design
Our primary goal with any Globe app is to offer a great reading and viewing experience. With the Android Edition, we designed an article page that reduces clutter and uses custom typography that connects the Android Edition to our print heritage.
A more curated approach to section pages
We publish hundreds of stories, videos and galleries to our website and apps every day. With the Android Edition, we’re offering a more curated approach to our section pages that focuses on the most important stories of the moment.
You can still find your favourite columns and features using the search option at the top of our section pages, where you can access the full depth of The Globe’s digital content and archives.
A better ad experience for readers
Our goal was to integrate advertising into the Android Edition in a way that both complements the reading experience and enhances a brand's impact. As you swipe down, larger ad units (compared to normal mobile or web standard) are positioned to separate, but never interrupt, articles. Similarly, you’ll find larger magazine-like full page ad units as you swipe between sections.
