For Canada Day, readers shared their favourite images of dusk, from PEI’s north shore to Vancouver Island’s farm country. Enjoy

Covehead, PEI. Sunsets on the north shore of Prince Edward Island are, as a rule, stunning, Alexander McAuley says. But ‘this one stands out because the sun is setting almost as far north as it goes before heading south at the solstice.’
Nanaimo, B.C. Donna Reimer says this view at Pipers Lagoon is often ‘spectacular’ in the summer, but this past June 15 was unusual: The clouds were positioned just right to reflect colours from the sunset, which is out of frame to the left.
Lasqueti Island, B.C. Jane Pearse says her family dogs, shown in August of 2022, love using this vantage point to watch for marine life and boats at sundown. ‘You can see the heat of the day coming off the rocky headland and the evening calmness of the dogs.’
Richmond Hill, Ont. ‘The crowd on the bridge admiring the sunset makes the picture more interesting,’ Mustafa Merchant says of this view at Lake Wilcox in May, 2021.
Wymbolwood Beach, Georgian Bay, Ont. In Greg Pieczonka’s opinion, his cottage beach north of Wasaga offers ‘the best sunsets in the world.’ Luna the dog is too busy digging to take in the view.
Grand Digue, N.B. This heron is hunting for a meal at low tide on the Northumberland Strait, Andre Gauvin explains. Behind it, a gull is resting on a sandbar, ‘completing this serene coastal scene.’
Brentwood, B.C. Bruce Campana of Loud Macaw Farm used an iPhone 14 ProMax to capture miniature llamas Brad, Lance and Fabio as the sun set on Vancouver Island. Fabio is known locally as the ‘kissing llama,’ Mr. Campana says: ‘One kiss from him is magical to watch – people just seem to feel relieved and forget their troubles.’
LaSalle, Que. Jayant Kandalgaonkar appreciated the rich colours on this stretch of the St. Lawrence River in September, 2018.
Rama, Ont. After the sun sets, the colours paint both the sky and the water, Ross Parkinson says of this view from June, 2018.
Powell River, B.C. ‘The photo wasn’t meant to be anything special,’ Nico Dirksen says; it was taken on a work trip as a colleague walked along the motel driveway. But ‘it unexpectedly seemed to encapsulate the serene essence and gentle grace of the seaside town.’
Spy Hill, Sask. In 2016, Luke DeCorby was exploring the family farm with cousins when they came to an old windmill. ‘Sharing the beauty and serenity of that moment with family made us reflect on the multitude of memories we had of visiting the farm growing up.’
Seal Island, N.S. Rick Whitman took this photo from a lobster boat in October, 2020, at the end of an 11-day trip with friends. The island, rich in wildlife and with only seasonal human inhabitants, was a ‘unique spot’ to visit, he says.
Winchell Lake, Alta. ‘Fall is frosting the air as the paddlers cherish the last days on the water, after the loons have already flown south,’ Susan MacLennan says of this excursion last year.

The Globe also asked some of Canada’s top photojournalists, and science reporter Ivan Semeniuk, to share their favourite sunset photos and tips on how to take better pictures. Enjoy the view, and happy Canada Day.
