Two men are dead and a third is in custody after an officer-involved shooting in Calgary.

Calgary Police said they responded to reports of suspicious behaviour Monday morning after a couple of men jumped into a five-ton cube van and were driving in an erratic manner considered dangerous to the public.

Police said officers slowly followed the vehicle as it continued swerving along the road and police vehicles were placed in strategic locations to make sure the van didn’t get into the heavily populated downtown.

A number of attempts were made to contain the suspect vehicle, but because of its size it broke through the containment, police said.

Forty-five minutes after the incident began, police said, the situation escalated and one officer discharged their firearm, killing two of the suspects inside the vehicle.

The officer is described as a 13-year veteran of the Calgary Police Service.
