An intensive search for a 74-year-old woman who was last seen picking mushrooms in northern Saskatchewan earlier this month has ended with her being found dead.

RCMP say searchers located Lois Chartrand deceased in a forested area approximately one kilometre from where she was last seen Aug. 4 in an area north of Smeaton.

Police had described Chartrand as an experienced mushroom picker who got separated from another person she was with, and they said that person then began searching for her and called police for help.

Police said they managed to communicate with Chartrand via a radio she was carrying up until the morning of Aug. 5, but she still couldn’t be located.

In a news release Monday, RCMP said her family has been notified and that their thoughts are with them during this difficult time.

They also thanked other police forces and search agencies that helped look for Chartrand, as well as community members and Chartrand’s family, who – despite the stressful circumstances – made sure searchers were fed and supported.
