A Regina man accused of killing two people in separate drive-by shootings has pleaded not guilty during the first day of his trial.
Dillon Ricky Whitehawk, 27, is facing two first-degree murder charges in the killings of Jordan Denton in November, 2019, and Keenan Toto in December, 2019.
The Crown alleges the killings were gang related. Prosecutors are scheduled to present their opening arguments and call their first witness Tuesday.
The prosecution is expected to call more than 30 witnesses, four of whom will have their identity protected under a publication ban.
During the first day of Mr. Whitehawk’s trial, a 14-person jury of mostly women was selected.
By deliberation day, the jury will be reduced to 12 by random selection.
To prevent outside influences, the jurors were instructed by the court to avoid researching Mr. Whitehawk’s name or case, including on social media.
The Court of Queen’s Bench trial is being held at the Delta Hotel in Regina and is scheduled to last for three weeks.
