Quebec’s police watchdog says it has opened an investigation after the discovery of two bodies in a vehicle in the city’s St-Léonard borough.

The description of the vehicle matches the one involved in a police investigation earlier this week into the disappearance of a 59-year-old man and his 76-year-old mother, but police have not confirmed the link.

The watchdog – called Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes – is mandated to investigate cases in which people die or are injured during interventions by Quebec police.

Constable Véronique Dubuc says the watchdog will analyze how police conducted their investigation into the disappearances, adding that provincial police will investigate separately on the two deaths.

First responders were called around 12:30 a.m. this morning to the vehicle parked in a commercial lot on Pascal-Gagnon Street.

Despite attempts to revive them, both people were pronounced dead at the scene, and Montreal police have described the deaths as suspicious.
