The Crown has stayed a charge of seeking to obtain sexual services against a Saskatchewan legislature member.
Ryan Domotor recently completed a prostitution offender intervention program, prosecutor Carmody Hallamore told reporters outside court Thursday.
The program is an alternative measure that lets people charged with an offence address the root cause without having going through court, she added.
It was the first time Domotor had faced such an offence, said Hallamore, so the Crown agreed he could take the program.
“If the person attends the programming to the satisfaction of the people at Regina Family Services, we are notified of that and then we stay the criminal charges,” she said.
Vice officers arrested the 56-year-old Saskatchewan Party backbencher and others in November in a sting operation to combat sexual exploitation and human trafficking.
A court record alleged Domotor communicated with an undercover police officer and was arrested at a Regina hotel in the city’s east end.
Soon after, Premier Scott Moe removed Domotor from caucus, calling the allegations disgusting and vile.
Domotor, who now sits as an Independent, didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment Thursday.
His lawyer, Darren Kraushaar, said he had no comment from his client on the stay.
“This is a common result involving an accused facing this type of allegation for the first time,” Kraushaar said in an email.
Hallamore said the stay means Domotor won’t have a criminal record.
“[He will] just move on with his life with however he chooses to do that.”
Domotor was elected in the Cut Knife-Turtleford constituency in the 2020 provincial election.
