Hamilton police say a man believed to be involved in a double homicide has fired shots from the residence he’s been barricaded in for hours.

Police are asking residents near 322 Jones Road and Barton Street to shelter in their basements as a precaution.

Police have said they are in contact with the man, believed to be in his 50s, and “continue to work toward a peaceful resolution.”

The force first notified the public of the investigation around 6 p.m. and later said the killings took place in the area of the east-end streets but have released few other details.

Police spokeswoman Jackie Penman says the force is “dealing with an active situation” and more information will be provided as it becomes available.

Police have warned the public to stay out of the area and say residents living nearby must remain in their homes.

A large response from Hamilton police, paramedics and fire crews could be seen in the area.

The force says the situation is also impacting traffic and are asking drivers to use alternate routes.
